About the Program
The Residential Distributed Energy Program was established to address the growing gap between residential electricity demand and available grid capacity in high-stress utility districts.
Operating Principles
The program operates on three principles.
Coordinated demand reduction
Individual home efficiency improvements, when deployed at meaningful scale within a region, produce measurable reductions in aggregate residential demand. RDEP identifies eligible residences and provides subsidized access to approved efficiency measures.
Distributed grid participation
In deregulated markets where residential-scale battery storage systems can provide grid services, RDEP coordinates participation between qualifying residences and grid services providers. Residences participate in shared consumption programs, with the grid services revenue offsetting the equipment cost.
Regional partnership execution
Actual installation and service work is performed by regional installers approved by the program. RDEP does not install directly — its role is program administration, residence qualification, and installer network coordination.
Program Mandate
RDEP's operating mandate is to reduce residential-side contribution to regional grid stress through the direct enrollment of qualifying residences into demand reduction and distributed storage programs. The mandate is coordinated with regional needs and program capacity. The program's primary success measure is aggregate grid stress reduction across active regions as quantified through quarterly and semi-annual stress-reduction reporting requirements.
Program Structure
RDEP is a funded program administered by Residential Distributed Energy Program, a Texas-registered entity operating in coordination with installer partners, energy services providers, and (in applicable markets) retail electricity providers.
Program eligibility, terms, participation cost, and installer selection are administered by a Board of Directors sub-committee. Thereby, program is not directly a government agency, is not directly affiliated with any public utility, and is not funded through public sources.
